Ka-Pō Ula (from the Chieftan Collection)
Ka-Pō Ula—the Crimson Skull, when we found it you see, it was coated with blood—unearthed during the ill-fated Henderson Expedition to Hiva Oa. The locals refused to speak its name aloud, whispering only of ‘the curse that burns through bone.’
They say it belonged to a priest-warrior who defied the gods by stealing fire from a sacred vent deep in the caldera. When the mountain roared in fury, only his head was left—glowing red, mid-scream."
Our explorers pried it from an altar beneath a canopy of black palms. The air smelled of sulfur and wet rope, and according to Henderson himself, “and I swear, old boy, the damn thing hummed all the way back to camp." Nasty business.
